Sagna: "It's bizarre"

By Aries

Bacary Sagna was voted the best right sided defender of the Premier League. Yet Raymond Domenech has decided to omit him from the 30 strong provisional France squad for Euro 2008.

However Bacary was not "surprised". "This is neither a surprise nor a disappointment. It's just bizarre, "he said.

“I had prepared for this eventuality due to my injury. These are the vagaries of football. I am injured at the wrong time”

It appears that Domenech has decided to select fitter players such as Willy Sagnol of Bayern Munich and Francois Clerc of Lyonnais instead.

Another omission form Arsenal’s point of view is Gael Clichy who like Sagna was voted in the Premier League’s best side (at left back) after having a fantastic season for Arsenal.

Domenech has called up Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and Eric Abidal of Barcelona for that position.

Abu Diaby has also missed out.

The omission of the Arsenal players may sadden them; but it is good news for Arsenal I say as they will have a chance to rest their weary legs, allow enough time for their injuries to heal and be ready for a new assault on the Premier League title for next season.

We will have to keep our fingers crossed however that the other Arsenal players called up for Euro 2008 keep away from injury.

We don't usually do well the season after summer competitions. Maybe the various injuries to our players will turn out to be a blessing in disguise as Rosicky will also miss out and perhaps RVP will not be fit enough to appear much, if at all for the Netherlands. Also, Cesc is not currently first choice in his position for Spain.

With so few Gooners in the French squad, who am I going to support in Euro 2008?!

Is Cesc still not a first choice for Spain? That coach must be a freaking idiot. If he is picking Alonso in front of him then he surely has some loose screws. I remember on WC when he played Xavi, Cesc and Alonso together, that was really interesting.

But I feel sorry for Clichy. That Abidal is so overrated. All he does for Barca is loose the ball and he has no initiative on the field, vice versa to Clichy.

Btw. have you noticed that the number of Arsenal players in the French squad has shrinken from 6 to 1 in matter of months. Diaby, Clichy and Sagna are not in it and Diarra and Flamini have gone away. Gallas is the only one left.

Gallas might not be here after the summer. I think wenger might think a whole summer of football for Gallas at his age will lead to a poor season next year. AW will wait for the euros to finish then flog our captain and buy a new centre back.
cesc is second choice in the spain squad. might get a few appearances and subs or if injuries strike other players he should get a few games but I dont expect to see that much of him.
RVP will be the only regular appearance on our screens for the 3 weeks but even he has a lot of competition for places. It will be interesting to see whether an injury ravaged season goes for or against him.
The Swiss will be knocked out by the first round!

Just to point out that Xavi didn't play in the last WC due to injury but is keeping Cesc out of the first 11. And Abidal is useless! What does Clichy have to do to get in the team? But in the final analysis, my guess is that all these Gunners will be fresh and raring to go next season.

Just goes to show, France have the most amazingly talented pool of players available but they'll win sweet fuck all.

It's like the old saying goes "Better to have a group of donkeys lead by a lion than a group of lions led by a donkey" or something like that, I'm sure that is a mixed metaphor but it still applies.

All the better for Arsenal though, it seems such a shame for Clichy but the longer the best left back in European football remains uncapped for his country the better.

I still do not know why any body in his right senses should bench Clichy for Evra and Abidal though france is got one of the best team in Europe but I think the coach's selection will only kill the team ...though he is right to exclude Sagna due to injury which I think is good for Arsenal ...I pray Gallas sits out of the matches so to have him fresh for Arsenal

Clichy is certainly not the best left back in Europe, what a load of crap. He's a very good young player, but has no international experience. Sometimes his defending can be a bit naive, he has lapses in concentration and doesn't cut out enough crosses. But he is improving steadily and should be a shoe-in by the time he's 25. Just because you support Arsenal, like I do, doesn't mean every player has a divine right to play for their country. Take your biased glasses off and get a grip.

Accurate comment anon 12:20 and very well put.

I don't think people should read too much into the exclusion of Sagna as it is predominantly down to injury and lack of match fitness in the run in to the competition.

Domenech explained this to him over the phone and Sagna accepted it even though he claimed he would be fit for the competition, but Domenech was concerned at the amount of minutes he has played so close to the Euro's.

The road that ran past our house was a one-lane rural route. Every morning, after our parents had gone to work, I'd wait for the mail lady to pull up to our box. Some days I would put enough change for a few stamps into a mason jar lid and leave it in the mailbox. I hated bothering mail lady with this transaction, which made her job take longer. But I liked that she knew that someone in our house sent letters into the outside world.
