Arsenal decide to transfer midfielder after inviting club to London for talks

By 1970’s Gooner

Arsenal seem to have taken the decision to finally go ahead with transferring one of their most experienced and loyal players.

Gilberto Silva has been, since his transfer from Atlético Mineiro right after he helped his country to victory in the World Cup of 2002, one of Arsene Wenger’s best buys.

But alas time has been catching up with him (he is now 32) managing only 17 appearances during last season after losing his place to the younger Flamini who has since moved on to what he considers the greener pastures of AC Milan.

Arsene Wenger appears however to have decided that Gilberto will not be the one to replace the gap left by Flamini as Arsenal have already send a fax to Greek club Panathinaikos inviting them to London for face to face talks about Gilberto’s transfer.

The meeting has already been set for next Wednesday and Panathinaikos are very keen to conclude what for them will be a major scoop.

It appears the player has already been talking terms with the Greek club and all that remains is to satisfy Arsenal’s demands.

Panathinaikos are offering the player £2m per year in a three year contract which is what the player has demanded. The third year will come into force if Gilberto plays in 50% of the games the year before.

The player’s agent Nicola Arkouri has indicated to the Greek press that his client will consider the offer seriously.

Panathinaikos which now has former Chelsea assistant boss Henk Ten Cate as their head coach are reportedly ready to start the bidding at £1.5m but they may have to increase that if they are to land their man.

  1. Legend. great player. if it wasn't for him the in the season before last i don't think we would have qualified for the champions league. he was brilliant, scored quite a few too. ill really miss him if he goes as he was a fantastic professional a phenomenally loyal player. i got a feeling he could one day manage us.

  2. The squad WAS wafer thin.

Whats the next level down after that then?

Oh I dream about us having a paper thin squad! If only.....

  6. he has a lot left in the tank, but with a talent like his he has to play. one of the very best, still think he can do a job for us though, we should be in no rush to sell at all.

  8. Where did you get this info from ?

  9. If true, I'll be sad to see him go. He is a great professional and obviously well respected by the rest of the team. It will be a shame to lose his experience from the squad, but unless he is playing regularly, his form will continue to suffer.

  13. He didn't lose his place, he was sacrificed to get Flamini signing a new contract.

32 aint old. Wenger only said the other day that a Midfielder is at his peak between 28 and 35.

He's still loyal to Arsenal after being stripped of the Captaincy (can't have a captain on the bench), and still loyal to Arsenal after being insultingly put on the bench ..... and you write crap about him like that. Gooner my arse.

  14. To anon 9.11

A real gooner is not necessarily a biased gooner mate.

Gilberto is on his last legs. It was plain to see last season so put aside the sentiment and use your logic!

  15. To be honest, he's been tollocks for at lest two years.

  16. Gilberto, the man, the legend, the loyalist among the ungrateful. Brazil's Captain, Arsenal's Captain the season before last. Quality professional, quality holding midfielder. If he goes I wish him well, if he stays, I wish he starts and proves his worth to our club, because he can still do a job. Him leaving us would mean we need 3 more good signings in the midfield. That does include Nasri, so Flamini is gone, now Gilberto, two holding midfielders, i want him to stay.

  17. A gnats wing thin squad! That's it!

    Cool!

Some Gooner's aint got a sense of humour have they? Sad, really.

Gilberto HASBEEN aloyal servant, but he has also disapeared in many games for the past 3 years, at least.

Bolton away a few years back sticks in the memory. He was awful, wasn't up to the fight and we lost.

Indeed, almost every game he played last season, we got over run in midfield.

Its a shame, but thems the facys.

Have a nice time in greece fella.

  18. Well, if he ends up leaving then good luck to him. If I were Wenger I would sign a new defensive midfielder. But then again, no one knows what Arsenal are going to do. In some ways I envy AC Milan, Barcelona, and Real Madrid fans in that their clubs are not quiet about the players they want to sign or the positions they are looking to fill. I wait for the day when Arsenal will finish all transfers early in the summer.

  20. Pat Rice has been a loyal servant but you wouldn't play him at right back would you!Good luck Berti buts it's time to say goodbye.

  21. I for one will be pleased to see Gilberto move on. Great servant to the club, but with Yaya on his way, Diaby and Song will also be more than good enough to play in that position.

  22. Just watch the through ball for Walcott vs Sunderland and tell me this guy is not special.

  23. Gilberto wants to start for almost every game. And for a player of his quality, it is understandable. I wish him all the best in his new club.

  33. i think its time to welcome gilberto silva to his new surroundings.welcome to panathinaikos gilberto!we re looking forward to watching you play for us!

  34. Arsenal fans must not feel sad for seeing Gilberto leaving. The whole deal was between Panathinaikos and Wenger himself. Panathinaikos enjoyed first option in case Gilberto was to go and in return Arsenal will have the first option if Ninis is set to go. I have to admit that by doing a small research this youngster Ninis looks a fantastic potential player. No wonder why Uefa compared him with Mesi from Barcelona... so... I hope Gilberto does well...and we are waiting for Ninis... John (Arsenal)
