Arshavin sheds light on Denilson’s mystery injury and admits Everton imposed their game

By Aries

Andrei Arshavin has been speaking about the Everton game stating that one cannot blame the severe whether conditions for Arsenal’s off form performance.

“To be honest, to be on the field was not very pleasant for the players of Arsenal and the opponent. Strong wind and snow always blowing in our faces. Unusual for a game at the Emirates.

On the other hand football is played in any weather, so this complaint is certainly not how we should explain the reason that we did not beat Everton” he said on his personal site.

The reason can be found in how Everton played he thought:

“Everton managed to impose their game, especially in the first half. They wisely blocked the wings and let us turn to the center of the field.

The fact that after the first half of the game, the score was 1-1, I think it was lucky for us”.

On Denilson’s injury he believed that it was a relapse of his back injury.

“He had a back injury. During the game he suffered a relapse. How seriously? I do not know. In any case we have another injured player”.

Indeed. And it is how Arsenal cope with all these absent players in the next few games that may go a long way in determining the fate of this campaign.

  4. I Love Arshavin's honesty. Yes we didn't deserve to win the game as Everton were the better team on the day, but we at least deserved the draw.

We missed Song yesterday. We were dominated in midfield and with Denilson injury i hope it wakes up Wenger to buy somebody. He should dip in the his pocket for Veloso (the guy is a versatile player) who would help our cause.

We now so desperate for a striker also. The amount of wasted opportunity we have at Arsenal annoys me and costs us games.

  5. I believe Arshavin is a bit stranded bein a Centre forward, hence the performance..
Why cant Arsenal rely on the young talents that Wenger is so obviously confident on.. Vela was crazy in West Ham match. Everton waz always gonna be a physical contest.. Vela i believe wudda been a key player rather than denilson or Ramsey for that matter.

  7. Sam oh, Sam, so the fault has now become AA's right? After he has been played out of position for the best part of this season and heas given all he can?

So what blame goes to the manager u decided, out of a desire to prove HIS YOUTH PROJECT right, refused to buy a CF who can withstand the traditional tall, strong and sometimes brutal CBs u find in the EPL these days? How is a diminutive creative forward supposed to survive and score in such situations? As far as I am concerned, AA has been sacrificed for Wenger's overblown ego.

Don't forget how we got to playing 4-3-3 in the first place-Wenger wanted to free Cesc to do what he's doing now-scoring plenty of goals and having as many assists. But what about Arshavin? How do we play to give him the freedom he needs to run at defences and create scoring chances and also score? It is simply by buying a tall, strong finisher who can stand toe-to-toe with the CBs we are facing in the next few weeks.
If we fail to buy such a striker and even add a DM who can play as a CB to it and our season ends after the run of games against the big four, dont blame Arshavin or Denilson, blame Wenger!

  8. I will blame Wenger if we fail to win, but I guess it's Craig Eastmond's time to step up now. Whatever you say about Arsene, you cant say he doesnt inadvertedly give chances to the youngsters. btw Traore was randomly hopeless.

  11. I know Arsenal were held by Everton and were lucky to get a point.Whatever it is, don't forget the role of the referee.
He shd have yellow carded a afew Everton players who I beleive under the guise of tackling were indirectly trying get at the Arsenal player.
Watch the video. This is not sour grapes. It's about time the ref's assessor question why some refs give a penalty and some don't.If it's a clear penalty discipline/punish the underperforming refs.
Football is too big to be decided by the man in black.

  12. arshavin shouldn't be blamed for not giving a rats arse. He is played completely out of position with sometimes little to no supplies/support...

But the 2 biggest jokes has got to be the sad scum who come on here to talk shite about arsenal because everything they do is somehow related back to us. Pathetic, go watch your 9-1 thumping of wigan and leave us alone. 2nd is the idiotic 7 people who votes for 'no one' in the poll of who we should buy. There are either on a wind up or refuse to look at the problem of our injury prone squad

  13. Goals from midfield should be considered as surplus to requirement even in a "total football" theory. A top team must have two proven goal scorers. At the moment we only have Eduardo and he's out of form. Arshavin is not and never will be a pure striker. We need replacement for RVP, not Bendtner. There are six billion people on the planet and people just look at a handful. Ridiculous. I'm sure many top talents in South America would do great in Europe, nobody just wants to take chances with them.

  14. Scum or no scum, every Arsenal fan, and I am one, knows the truth.. in a year that the title is really up for grabs,Arsene's policy is recklessness of the first degree. Gooner 1970 wrote about it many times in the past: How is it possible even to question that a CF is necessary? Arshavin is a genius player misused, abused, sacrificed. Who the fuck is Nick Bendtner to be our messiah, and when? Almunia is a coward hapless keeper, probably one of the five worst in the league. How can you overwork Vermaelen and 33years old warrior Gallas like that and not see a major injury is very very close?.How come we have to rely on an auxilary player like Denilson who is a not a bad player as many vindictively say(and BTW another one overworked over a whole season) but is a squad player and not more. A 22 years old skipper talent AND Passsion is what makes this team tick, but also with him, sometimes, it is not a clear to any honest fan that this team can win the big ones. We are not far off, but ARSENE's policy and the way he continues to dupe the fans is just absolutely incredible

  15. We should improve our weakest link, and that's the goalie, and that is most effective and cost the least. For 10 - 15 mil you can get a better goalie easily.

  17. i remember when we cried for baptista. When he finally arrived we were disappointed.I think sometimes we buy too much into the comments on pundits. United have "very good" strikers like chelski but arsenal has more goals than them all. I think the weakest link is Uncle Almunia.

  18. Arshavin is a good player. I have found a site with a signed Arsenal memorabilia shirt. This shirt is signed by the whole team.

  19. arsenal fans need to get a grip, wenger is one of the best managers in world football, who you are lucky to have, he's given you one of the most attacking teams in europe and spent pennies compared to most teams. yes you need a striker but how do you keep replacing your henry's or adebayor's on the pittance your board give him?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Totally agree Sam.
From a post from another Arsenal blog: "Unlike his predecessor up front Arshavin doesn’t seem to want to trouble himself by moving from wing to wing to get the ball and create space. He never tackles back, he’s non-existant in defense, he can’t get any height and contributes nothing to the build up with headed through balls or knock downs. I even saw him standing with his hands on his hips at the weekend!"

I love Arshavin but all those Arshavin-can-do-no-wrong guys should get off Wenger's back and stop watching the game through blinkered eyes. With Arshavin's attitude it would be criminal to play him in his prefered midfield role.

  21. For all the experience nine years at Old Trafford may have given Silvestre, the truth is his best days are some distance behind him, and even in those glory years he never consistently secured a starting berth in the centre of their defence – in fact the seasons he did were some of United’s poorest, so in Silvestre we are far from talking about one of the greats. Senderos meanwhile, having enjoyed success and ridicule in equal measure in an Arsenal shirt in the past, looks to have played his last game for us – being left out of even the Carling Cup team makes that a near certainty – and whilst Djourou has consistently shown great promise in Arsenal colours, he will not be appearing for us in 2009/10.

So with this in mind, a man with five senior honours to his name in the red and white of Arsenal, with the respect of Arsene Wenger and seemingly the rest of the Arsenal squad, and a level of dedication and professionalism rarely seen in a player of his age, represents a perfect solution to a short term problem – the need for a third choice centre half until Djourou returns.

Unlike Silvestre, we are talking about one of the most talented defenders of his generation, and a man that was the rock on which a double winning team and an invincible side were built. You can argue that at 35 his lack of pace may let him down, you can argue he has shown psychological weakness in the past, you can argue the last veteran defender we bought has been a unreserved flop – and they’re all valid points. But can you find me a better third choice centre half in the Premier Division than the experience, resilience and might of Big Sol? I think you’ll struggle.

Now… Dennis Bergkamp to step in for Van Persie anyone?

  23. In bringing Sol Campbell back Arsene Wenger has done something that I never thought he would ever do and re-signed a former player.

Wenger is a stubborn man but perhaps this sudden change of policy is the sign of a person who will even go against his own principles to bring back silverware to us. This surely is only a good thing.

There is mixed reaction about Campbell coming back to us, that is expected, but at least it shows that Arsene is prepared to swallow some pride because he knows that it is best for Arsenal.

Some people believe that Wenger has an agenda regarding Arsenal and that he refuses to change his ways. Well, the signing of Sol proves that wrong.

As I've said Wenger is stubborn and appeared stuck in his ways but if he is prepared to mellow a little for Arsenal to win things then I think he deserves some credit for doing so.

Have you ever heard of the saying "The Grass Isn't Always Greener On The Other Side"? Well, how many former Arsenal players does that ring true with?

    The list is endless.

I've posted about former which former Gunner(s) I'd like Wenger to re-sign in the past and Sol Campbell was top of the list. That's not entirely true. But a player I'd love to see come back is Mathieu Flamini.

I know, I know, he's a money-grabbing little traitor fucker and in the past I've even called him Fla-money but if we are ready to forgive Sol Campbell (who's past misdemeanors could be considered worse than Fla-money's, sorry Flamini's) then I'm ready to welcome the Frenchman back with open arms.

Of course it seems that Mathieu fucked us over. But in truth Arsenal are equally to blame for him leaving. We tried to sell him to Birmingham the summer before he actually left and we let his contract run down.

There is a slight chance that Flamini didn't feel wanted in the last year of his contract.

Having said that Mathieu did say he wanted to stay and the next minute he was swanning off to Italy to sign a contract with his boyhood idol's AC Milan. I'm sure he did the same to Marseille, so he had previous.

So really Arsenal and Flamini are both to blame for him leaving under such poxy circumstances.

What chance is there of being a reconciliation? With Campbell coming back there has to be a chance.

Who knows how Alex Song will come back from the African Cup of Nations? The man filling his shoes, Denilson, is injured. This injury may be more serious than first thought, especially when you see how the Brazilian went down completely unchallenged.

Fabregas would love it. Apparently our skipper and Flamini was joined at the hip when together. They certainly gelled and in my opinion could have formed a partnership as good as, if not better, than Vieira and Petit.

Yes, I really did say that.

A loan/permanent move for our former hyperactive midfielder would be good for the club. He is unhappy at Milan and we could do with his drive and determination.

Imagine a midfield of Song, Cesc and Flamini? Pretty solid. Add the likes of Diaby, Ramsey and Denilson . We would have the best midfield options in the league. Proper.

  24. Moves for old boys such as Patrick Vieira and Sol Campbell no panic measure:

So, Patrick Vieira is back in the Premier League, with Manchester City, and Sol Campbell could be following suit, with Arsenal. I can see the headlines already: “Dad’s Army”. And I can almost hear that famous refrain of Corporal Jones: “Don’t panic, Mr Mainwaring.”

Not for one minute, though, do I think that these are panic measures. Yes, Vieira and Campbell are into their thirties, their best years are well behind them and, after every error, the vultures will be circling to pick at their carcasses. Too old, too slow. Gone.

Yet these are just the sort of short-term deals that could benefit City and Arsenal as they chase honours. Legs may be a shade weary, limbs may not be as combative as in the past, but it is what goes on between the ears that is vital. Patrick and Sol still have that in abundance.

What Roberto Mancini, Arsène Wenger or any manager does not want, when investing in the 30-plus brigade, is twofold: 1) a player who can’t run, whose body has given up, and 2) a bad influence in the dressing room, a know-it-all has-been.

What they do want is experience — that unquantifiable commodity that can turn a good team into a trophy-winning team. An on-pitch leader is essential in the heat of the battle, when the manager is restricted to the sidelines and unable to make any immediate impact. The “old head” can guide, advise and cajole his team-mates instantly.

I remember playing for Chelsea against Kevin Moran, who was winding down his career with Blackburn Rovers. He kept fouling me, falling over and winning the free kick. Every time. It was experience and instinct, an absolute art. His time was almost up, perhaps, but he knew exactly what to do. I hardly got a kick.

In my younger days, I used to learn a lot from my older colleagues. I managed to play on until I was 38 — with Nancy, the French club — so I must have been doing something right. The coach obviously felt I could still make a contribution and it was only my bad right knee that did for me in the end.

Vieira is a done deal. I’m told he has always been a good influence in the dressing room, which is what Mancini will be looking for, and there is plenty of pace around him in the City team to ease his physical burden.

The Campbell move could also happen. It’s not the sort of quick-fix remedy that Wenger usually goes for, but Sol would add much-needed nous to an essentially youthful line-up.

City and Arsenal fans should not cry “We’re doomed” at the arrival of their Dad’s Army recruit. After all, the prediction of Private Frazer, the veteran soldier, rarely proved correct.

  26. Sol Campbell: leaving Arsenal was a mistake

Sol Campbell has admitted for the first time that he regrets leaving Arsenal in the summer of 2006.

The 35-year-old former England central defender, who has agreed a short-term contract that will take him up to the summer, last played for the club on May 17, 2006, when he scored in their 2-1 defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League final.

Yesterday, when asked if it was a mistake to have left the club with whom he spent five years, he replied: “Yeah. Sometimes when you go away, you look back and I realised what a top club Arsenal are. OK, I won the FA Cup [with Portsmouth in 2008], which was not too bad, but the quality of football was different at other clubs.

“Being out of the game helped revitalise me. I feel really fresh and I have a craving to get the ball. I’ve had time to reflect. Now, I have been given a chance and I’m desperate to play. I’m in better shape now than in the summer. The hard work was getting in this position.”

Campbell, who won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with Arsenal, said: “I first knew about the possibility of a contract about two or three weeks ago. I wasn’t shocked, I was training hard [for it].

“I had other offers but Arsène [Wenger, the manager] told me about the deal and I said, ‘Let’s make it happen.’ It was the best feeling I’d experienced in football for a long time.

“Arsène is a very clever man when it comes to football. I think he saw my determination. It is an honour and I have to repay him.”

Campbell, who will earn £50,000 a week, played for 45 minutes in the reserve-team match away to West Ham United on Tuesday evening, which he declared “was enough after seven months without a proper game”.

His last league game was for Notts County away to Morecambe in Coca-Cola League Two in September after he had left Portsmouth to link up with Sven-Göran Eriksson, but the move ended in acrimony.

Despite so long on the sidelines, he has assured Wenger and Arsenal that his fitness levels are better than when he left Portsmouth and says that the Prozone statistics prove it. The sport science company produces data based on a variety of training methods, ranging from short sprints to total distances covered during a 90-minute match.

Campbell, who rejected the opportunity to sign deals with Hull City and Newcastle United, may not look the athlete he once was, but he clearly feels he is getting there. “I’m desperate to play,” he said. “Arsène had been watching me train with the coaches and all the stats guys had a massive dossier on me — the stats are good.”

Campbell’s arrival will not threaten William Gallas or Thomas Vermaelen, the centre backs, yet it will add some depth to a problematic area within Wenger’s squad. MikaĂ«l Silvestre has failed to impress and Johan Djourou is ruled out until March with a knee injury.

More important, perhaps, will be Campbell’s impact on the club’s players for the future. His deal may be only for six months, yet he is ready to help the careers of those such as Kyle Bartley, his 18-year-old defensive partner in the reserves against West Ham.

“The likes of me and William have seen it all before,” Campbell said.

“Arsenal have some fantastic young players but, as the games come thick and fast, it is all about getting the results because all those points add up at the end of the season. Arsène is probably looking for a little bit of experience to help carry the lads through.”

Campbell’s first chance to play for the first team will come in the Barclays Premier League match away to Bolton Wanderers on Sunday, but he is more likely to be picked for the return fixture three days later or the FA Cup fourth-round tie away to Stoke City a week on Sunday.
