Diaby is ready for centre back start

By 1970’s Gooner

I think Diaby is ready to play in the middle of the defence at Sunderland on Saturday. He is fit, tall enough to compete with the aerial balls O’Neil’s side will throw at Arsenal’s defence aiming for Fletcher and/or Graham and most important of all he will be a far better proposition than Squillaci or the youngster Miquel.

With Vermaelen ruled out already and Koscienly having limped off during France’s international game against Germany Wenger needs to think hard how to fill in the void created.

Squillaci already has one foot out of Arsenal with his contract expiring in June. Additionally he has not played a first team competitive game in the League this season. He is definitely not ready to start any game let alone this tough fixture at Sunderland. Even when he used to get those rare starts he was a disaster waiting to happen and it often did!

Miquel also cannot be trusted to start this fixture where aerial ability and correct positioning will be of paramount importance.

This is a no brainer for me. Diaby should start alongside Mertesacker. Sagna and Monreal on either side. The midfield trio will be Arteta, Wilshere and Cazorla. In attack will be Theo, Podolski and Giroud.

Szczesny

Sagna Diaby Mertesacker Monreal

Arteta Wilshere Cazorla

Walcott Giroud Podolski

  6. I don't know if its such a crazy idea... at least when you consider the alternatives. Who would you rather have, Squillaci, Miquel or Diaby?

Diaby might just be the best choice of 3 bad choices.

    1. He has absolutely none of the defensive attributes needed to fulfill the role.

  7. Why not play Sagna at CB (he has done before and bring in Jenks???

  11. I really dont know what to say, can you imagine Diaby trying to dribble out from the back.
    Seriously dude

  12. It's a no Brainer indeed. You simply play a three man defence with a four man midfield and of course too wing forwards and a centre striker. Of which Diaby covers the back three and wilshere help swept things up. Simple

  13. I would not like to see diaby at the back line, he plays with ball much and cause own goal nope.

  14. Just be glad this guy is not a manager.
    Enough said...

  15. Just because he is tall and big and strong .. doesn't mean he is a defender!!

  16. Play santos as CB.

  17. I know, Giroud is big, tall and strong why dont we stick him in defence instead? Diaby, CB, Seriously???

  18. Jezz..diaby in defence? I would rather to see miguel. Beside why so scared, we already of the competition,4 is unlikely. Hope arsene had the ball to play miguel, he had the ball for not entering the market.

  19. If tall is all that was needed to be a CB then anyone can play there.

    Works in Fifa only.

Throw Miquel in, it's his position and Sunderland is a great game to show his stuff. I have high hopes for the kid. And he deserves his chance.

Otherwise what some are saying is good. Sagna in and Jenks to cover RB.

    Diaby...smh

  20. We wouldn't be in this mess if Wenger bought a Centre defender! Wenger out!!!!! U don't know what your doing

  21. Yeah why not. And while your there, put Metersacker as striker since players positions don't matter

  22. A few things from AW's pre-match press conference:

    (1) AW stated that the odds of Kos being fit for the match were pretty good

    (2) AW alluded to options if Kos does not make it -

    (a) Miquel
    (b) Sagna CB, Jenks RB

... Hopefully Kos is fit for the match, but even if he is not, option 2b is much preferable to Diaby suddenly being brought into the back line, when his normal play is not even considered to be as a DM, but more box-to-box.

  23. Really!!!???! Really, really???!!?

  24. Sagna at CB (or even Miguel), Jenkinson at RB...sorted

Diaby would be a terrible selection....
