Arsenal agree transfer for midfielder as agent flies to Athens to discuss personal terms

By 1970’s Gooner

Arsenal have agreed to transfer Gilberto Silva to Panathinaikos and Gilberto may be keen on the idea too.

Ken Friar is reported today in the Greek press as having said that he has, on behalf of Arsenal, come to an agreement in principle with Panathinaikos president Nikos Pateras.

All that remains now is for the player to agree personal terms for the deal to go through.

"If Gilberto agrees personal terms then we will not stand in his way" Friar said to Greek paper "SportDay". "If this happens then it seems that we will agree a transfer fee with Panathinaikos".

For this reason the meeting that was scheduled to take place today in London has been transferred to the more sunny climate of Athens where Gilberto’s agent, Frank Trimboli, from “Base” agency will carry out the negotiations.

He may be taking with him Greek speaking Sakis Tzikas, an ex footballer in Greece who is a consultant with “Base”, so that he could help with the negotiations.

"Base" Agency has a number of footballers on its books such as Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone of Tottenham and Andy Johnson of Everton.

Gilberto himself who is holidaying on his farm in Brazil is reported to have said that if personal terms are satisfactory then he will consider coming to Athens.

“I don’t have a problem about playing in Greece if the financial terms are satisfactory” he said.

As we first revealed two days ago on this site, the Greek club are willing to meet Gilberto’s demand for a three year contract with the same wages he is currently on at Arsenal (£2m per year).

The third year however will come into force if Gilberto plays in 50% of the games the year before.

What has accelerated the deal has been the decline in the interest originally shown by two German clubs, Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund who could not meet the player’s high wage demands.

Panathinaikos, which now has former Chelsea assistant boss Henk Ten Cate as their head coach, are very keen to conclude the deal which for them will be considered a major scoop.

They expect that part of the outlay will be recovered form an expected surge in season ticket sales as Gilberto’s reputation as a World Cup winner and a current international with Brazil ranks highly.

Gilberto will also, if the deal goes through, have fellow Brazilian Rivaldo for company. He has been exciting the crowds with his sublime skills for a number of years at Athens based clubs Olympiakos and currently with AEK.

Various transfer fees are reported in the press which are between £1m and £2.5m.

Arsenal decide to transfer midfielder after inviting club to London for talks

The woman behind Nasri!

Is it all Wenger’s fault this transfer activity?

We are loosing all our experienced players. lehmann Gilberto, Pires, henry, Vieira, Hleb, Bergkamp, etc

what next?

Fabregas Robin Clichy and Toure will go next year if we dont win anything!

We are losing experienced player.. because they are getting old!! Lehman - 38 and definitely past his best. Gilberto - 32 and look how much of a difference a younger and more energetic player (Flamini) made last year. Pires - 34, two serious knee injuries. Having said that he is still playing well for Villareal. Henry - 31 and now injury prone and without his pace. Vieira - 32, also injury prone. Hleb - 27 so the exception here, but he doesnt provide the end product often enough. Bergkamp - 39 and we definitely got the best out of him before the age finally caught up.

To summarise, although it was a blow to lose these players and others (Lauren, Campbell, Parlour...) we definitley got the best years out of themand in most case a decent bit of £££.

To Km1980

we never replaced those players. we need to add more experienced players in the squad rather than promoting youngsters in the first team as we have done before and as we are about to do now.

Anonymous said...

Rightly said Ben. km1980, like the anonymous user above has said, we've failed to replace the experienced players.

And I don't need to tell you of the impact Scholes and Giggs had on their team last season. At some point in a team's life, it's the experience that counts and not youthful vigour...just see how we blew away the title last season...

I posit that Wenger's has had his time with us should we fail to improve significantly on our squad before the transfer window shuts

i cant understand why all the arsenal players are leaving? the team is finally coming together and playing brilliant football. just when the players are performing at their best they leave. its so frustrating. i fear wenger wont replace them with real experienced, quality players. he will say that arsenal have quality coming through from the reserves and that the squad will cope. if this happens arsenal are in deep shit! i hear too many players leaving arsenal and not enough coming in. plz wenger bring order to arsenal.

Anonymous said...

Both the points above are absolutely valid and I'm not going to argue against fact, we did not neccessarily replace experience with experience. But.. we did replace the players with quality. Adebayor has scored a lot of goals despite the strong feelings of some about his all round ability. Eduardo was well on course to do the same. Sagna has proved to bas as good a signing as any Wenger has made, and we have also seen the likes of Fabregas and Clichy develop into players who we would not like to see replaced by a more experienced signing.

And its also worth pointing out that players like Scholes and Giggs have been playing less games than before because of Man Utd's superior strength in depth - which is a direct result of the vast ammount of extra £££ they have spent compared to us (Nani, Anderson, Hargreaves, Tevez, Carrick etc). Therefore Scholes and Giggs have been able to come into the side relatively fresh, but we dont have that option.

To Km1980

We had a paper thin squad last year. Now it will be so brittle that we will be fearing the worst every time a player falls on the ground.

It looks like more of the same again.

Play it again Sam.....

Well done Arsenal Analysis the Sun has just got hold of the story you broke thre days ago!

OK,enough said! Let me enlighten you lot. We don't have the money to keep Gilberto. His transfer fee might be small but his wages are not,and an extended contract won't be in the best interest of Arsenal.

You keep talking about "experienced" players, maybe you should say "older" players because the last time I checked at least half our starting lineup has enough experience. They may be young, but they've got experience.

We can't afford to buy experienced players because they're already on a lot of money where ever they are now, and if they're any good then they'll be expensive.

So, we are getting rid of the high earners like Gilberto (who is not a 1 game a week player anymore, never mind 2 ... but neither is Scholes & Giggs ... however, Utd can afford it), and those like Ade and Hleb who want to earn 120,000 per week. We are replacing them with younger players who have no right asking for a lot of money now. Eventually, they'll either ask to be transferred or we'll sell them because we want to manage our wage bill and help pay for the stadium, etc.

The key is to get a lot of youngsters and introduce them early. STOP ASKING FOR EXPERIENCED (OLDER) PLAYERS! WE'RE NOT GETTING ANY! However, get used to seeing a lot of talented youngsters, because we're going to give them the best chance to be stars - either with Arsenal or somewhere else. Go Gunners!

But then again, WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY THAT IS GOING INTO THE CLUB NOWADAYS? Someone should ask the board some questions - Arsenal Supporters Trust anyone? Or, maybe we should strike, march, anything to get some answers from those cowards.

If all the mess in the news about Arsenal is not true, then why not come out and say so, and save some lives. Because, seeing this club go under will kill a lot of people, literally. If there's a problem then the fans MUST be a vital part to the solution!

The following is according to Geoff, a blogger on http://le-grove.co.uk/

"Wenger saying we have to pay back £24 million a year for 17 years is just rubbish, that’s £408 million, how can we have got all that money in from sponsors plus the sale of Highbury, plus treble match revenue for 2 years, plus transfer surpluses, plus prize money and have paid nothing off the £450 million it cost to build the stadium.

And before anyone says Highbury square hasn’t been sold yet, I know that, but deposits have been taken and 90% have been sold, or are the ads just lies as well? And that goes in 2009.

It’s complete nonsense, we are being treated like children, and fed bullshit lines like that, where does all our money go?

We were told we had to move to compete, they forget to add ‘but not in your lifetime’

Anyway ManU have to pay £63 million a year in interest, make less per game than we do and still spend millions every year on new players, if this board don’t watch it, they’ll lose the support of the small shareholder and then they’ll be a takeover and then whoever buys it will plunge the club into massive debt, just like the Glazers did, so all this bollocks will be in vain. "

Well, there will be a press conference sooner or later. Even though we might have to wait until a deal is done, or until our first preseason game. This silence from the board can't go on forever. At the Euros, Wenger was like a Parrot. Now the cat's got his tongue. I just can't figure this club out. May God save our Beloved Arsenal. Go Gunners

to mr anonymous at the bottom. im all for giving the youngsters a chance to be stars, but using youngsters isnt going to win arsenal tropthies! and winning trophies is what all arsenal fans want. for three years arsenal have been playing great football but havent won anything. the reason for this is too many youngsters (although talented but inexperienced) and arsenal selling all their top players. arsenal fail to hold on to players that are at their peak. arsenal dont fight hard enough to keep them (but i understand they do have debt with the new stadium). wenger will find a unknown replacement and will turn him into a star but in a few years. and once the player is a star he will move on. arsenal really is a selling club! and selling clubs dont win trophies. im just saying arsenal should stop being a selling club and rather be a winning club. and winning clubs have stars, not stars in the making. gunners for life.

I hate to see us losing players when new ones are not joining , we have only signed Nasri and Ramsey we have Merida and Vela , we are not even sure if they will play injury free next season and we have lost flamini , Hleb ,Gilberto and Lehman... whats happening to us something urgent needs to be done. I am sure we will loss more players next season if we don't win anything which will be very bad.

i am a little confused as to why everyone keeps saying we losing all our "stars" in their prime. We are not. Only Flamini leaving at the stage in his career is a loss. He is a mercinary player who plays the transfer game very well. It is not Arsenal's fault players have immense power now. Regarding the other players that have left lets have a look shall we...how many of them were able to get into the side for games other than CC games...Lehman- No, Gilberto - No, Lungberg - No, Bergkamp was nearly 40 when he finished, Henry was riddled with injury and was not starting many games at all. So bar Flamini we have only sold players when they are too old to get in the first team. If that makes us a selling club then good on us.

Anonymous said...

to mr marcus.

yes they are old and werent gud enuf to make arsenals first team. but they were gud experienced playes that could come on as sub and close the game out and arsenal arent replacing them. yes lehman couldnt make the first team yet he is first choice for germany who made it to uero 2008 final. gilberto is in the starting lineup for brazil(one of the best, if not the best team in the world). lungberg is captain of sweden(or was, he retired from international football now tho). we've lost flamini, hleb and probably adebayor. and arsenal aren't replacing them. its not gud that arsenal are a selling club. quite the opposite. gunners for life
