Arshavin not sure on penalty and his man of the match may surprise you

By Aries

Andrey Arshavin was waiving his finger at referee Lee Mason when he went down in Portsmouth’s penalty area after a challenge by Davies.

This was not to demand a penalty but to indicate that it wasn’t!

Like, if you are old enough to remember, a similar gesture by Liverpool’s Robbie Fowler at Highbury a long time ago when he was brought down by Seaman…

Arshavin was right, as TV replays showed that Davies had touched the ball but, as in that game against Liverpool, the penalty was given.

Andrey has been quoted as saying that he thought Arsenal’s first shout for a penalty (when Vela was brought down in the area) was cast iron rather than the second but it was after all was the decision of the referee:

“For the first claim the penalty kick was indisputable. The second? It was at the discretion of the referee” Andrey said diplomatically.

He also revealed why he did not take the penalty and it wasn’t because he was the one that was brought down in the process of winning it. He was simply not the nominated penalty taker for the day.

“Before the game the first penalty taker was nominated. Bendtner was first on the list” he said.

Andrey also noticed that Portmouth lacked motivation and were also missing several players but his man of the match for Arsenal was…. Denilson.

“Denilson, who played central midfield, in my opinion, was master of all the players. He selected and made all the passes to those around him”.

Andrey showing that he is also a cultured lad bothered to find out about the town of Portsmouth:

"The history of the city is really interesting. Today I learned that King Richard the Lionheart paid particular attention to this town. I was also told that at a place near Portsmouth Charles Dickens was born ....

I noted when traveling on the team bus a very beautiful coastline with a lot of yachts".

Looks like the Russian is more than just pitch quality.

I command his effort to notify the ref he was wrong. Last year we lost a couple of games due through bad penalty decisions (most noteably against Liverpool.

I hoped then our players would be man enough to say it wasn't a penelaty in the future.

At ManU they train their prized assets on the stumbling and hand raising to the sky like a victim of hughe unjustice.

To me that's even worse than cheating.

I think Asharvin is being modest by not naming himself. However, other than Asharvin, Denilson would come next if you exclude Bendtner. To be honest, if you examine the performance of every player closely, Denilson had a very good game. Only Asharvin was better than him, but as usual, few people notice. Yes, Bendtner did stick two goals, and in every goal Asharvin had a role, the assist for the first, he drew the penalty, and it was his shot that was blocked and recocheted to Vela. Most people on here rated (and consistently rate) Denilson low because of habits including the writer of this blog, and perhaps because he is a johny foreigner. In your rating you rated Walcot (6.5) above Denilson (6) with Ramsey (6) same as Denilson. Just what did Walcot do to deserve a rate higher (albeit only slightly) than Denilson, is beyond me. The most he did in this match was run, he never made any telling pass to any one. This is what he always does, he gets rated more for potential, and perhaps his englishness, than what he actually does on the pitch. Similarly, Ramsey was rather wasteful and too hestant to deserve an equal rating to Denilson. The best pass (and that was really good, I hope this is what he is going to develop into) Ramsey made was the one that lead to Pamarot's dismissal for clumsily felling Asharvin.

Since this website is so up Arshavin's butt, maybe his praise for Denilson will remove your blinkers and you might start to see what he brings to the team. Arshavin did not need to single him out for praise, but clearly he knows a good performance when he sees one and doesn't let pre-conceived notions impair his judgement.

Hmmmm, evidently I don't know a lot about football because I thought it was a penalty even after seeing the replays. Yes he got a slight touch on the ball but I thought he went through Arshavin's left leg in order to get a touch to the ball.

WTF is up with this shitty site being ridiculously Arshavin-related since we got this guy?

Maybe because Andrey Arshavin is the best player in the world!
He is pure class!!
Love Him..!!!!

Denilson made 8 successful tackles and 6 intercepts yesterday (the heart of his game) yet few notice it. He constantly presses and harries the opposition. Its the "water carrier" role, someone has to do it, and even at 21 there are few in world football better at it.

I'm also not too young to remember Giggs being brought down at Old Trafford vs AFC and immediately getting up to tell the ref it wasn't a penalty (coincidently Scholes came over quickly to shut him up), the only man ever in a Utd shirt that I haven’t loathed the site of and a man with too much character for their team.
Also as far as all these comments about Denilson i know all you guys are getting pretty sick of everyone bad mouthing a guy that you think is good player and as far as I’m concerned he does go unappreciated when he does do well and then immediately picked out when he's crap. That said you shouldn't have a go at the writer for appreciating what is a very talented and morally superior player to arguably most of our players (if not all).
