Eduardo lifted his shirt after scoring Arsenal’s second goal to reveal a message written in portuguese: Paz na villa kennedy- RJ meaning "Peace in the Villa Kennedy-RJ'
This is a reference to a community in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil where Eduardo was born.
The slum has been the subject of fighting between rival criminal factions. Schools, kindergartens, health centres and shops all closed down on account of local upheaval. People also fled their homes.
The neighborhood began as a low cost housing project, funded mostly by the Kennedy administration's Alliance for Progress program of the 1960s and was originally to be named the Villa Progresso, but later changed to Villa Kennedy to honor the slain president.

Thank you so much for this. I will translate this piece so as to spread the news to Arsenal fans in China.
that last paragraph reminded me of the film City of God, if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it, most amazing film I have ever seen. In portuguese though so if you don't mind subs you will like it
I know it’s slightly off subject, but I’m copying this to a few Gooner blogs because it’s hilarious and I’m sure all Gooners will be rolling around on the floor when they read it. Below are a couple of comments copied from a Citeh blog and trust me, there are also many more like these on Citeh blogs:
Quote - “Adebayor looked off the pace and lazy today. I hope those Arsenal fans weren't right about him.”
Quote - “I was screaming at the screen today...Adebayor just didn't want to move, it was infuriating!! I just wish he'd shut up, he talks in the media all week about Arsenal then performs like that again. He needs to get over Arsenal and focus on us.”
Arsene Wenger really does wear a magic hat – the man is a genius.
I’d also like to comment that it seems the only way teams can match us initially in games is to sprint around like mad closing the space, but no one can keep that pace up for long and we seem to be scoring regularly in the last 15 minutes before half time. Ramsey also looks very good and with a run in the team, I’m sure he’ll improve and be able to cover for Song in Jan/Feb.
One match at a time, but it’s clear that AW’s long-term plan is starting to bear fruit.
I agree with Anonymous about the City of God movie. It's superb. If you can't read subtitles & yr not blind-shame on you.
I feel really sorry for the people in those slum areas of Brasil where the gangs control everything (including the police. And what is it down to? Check it out? Try and help these people by writing about what happens in these communities. Eduardo has gone up in my estimation a great deal. Hope somebody reads & looks into this cos I can't tell u how to think. Peace.
Wait till Platini finds out, he'll demand he's banned for showing a shirt with a slogan on it.
Fuck Platini
Platini will somehow link this to the 6+5 rule...
COME ON YOU GUNNERS!
Watch "DANCING WITH THE DEVIL" on More 4 on Tuesday 10th November at 10pm. This film about gang violence in Rio de Janeiro has a long section about Villa Kennedy and includes an interview with the leader of the Red Command gang in Villa Kennedy who calls himself Nike. He explains how there has been a peace treaty between his gang and the rival Pure Third Command Gang from neighbouring Villa Alianca but since the film was finished, the leader of the Villa Alianca gang has been killed by the police and the new boss of Villa Alianca is now trying to take over Villa Kennedy, hence the extreme violence that has started again. In this film you see Rio's top drug lords talking openly and showing their faces for the first time ever and you learn a huge amount about the lives of people in the favelas where Eduardo grew up. A must watch
before this kanoute also did what eduardo did last nite, sent a humanity message to the world about palestine. unfortunately he was fined. is it that the same thing will happen to dudu?
Thanks for the heads up on DANCING WITH THE DEVIL Jon. Off topic slightly but I have to say I think City of God is apalling. Check out Pixote, or the film that inspired both the aforementioned, Los Olvidados.
Thanks for the tip on "Dancing with the Devil" Jon. Also thanx for the movie tips Martin. It takes all sorts to make a world, thankfully, but did you really think City of God appaling or just not as good as you expected it to be after the 'Film Critics' glorified and hyped it up?
I watched City of God last year after reading Denilson's interview about his life in favela in Sao Paulo. It was quite a shock. Respect to our two Brazilian guys, Deni&Eduardo, who overcame that harsh reality of life and have been working extremely hard to fulfill their potential and dreams.
I got City Of God on DVD. Excellent movie!
City of God is a great film just not a Hollywood style production.
I always felt this was the season for us and couldn't understand that so many of Arsenal fans shoveled so much c**p on some players and the manager. I believe in Wenger strongly and it's great to watch this season unfold. it"s bloody brilliant and we all deserve it.
Thanks to Steve D. for sharing.
