Wenger interested in Portsmouth ace to replace Arsenal midfielder

By Aries

According to information coming out of the Croatian press, Arsene Wenger is looking to pair Eduardo and Portsmouth ace midfielder fellow Croatian Nico Kranjcar for next year.

Apparently Nico has been earmarked by Wenger to come in as a replacement for Alexander Hleb who has been linked recently with a move to Barcelona to join Thierry Henry. Inter Milan have also shown interest with an offer to come in the summer of 14m.

This has prompted Hleb’s agent Niki Spilevski to make a statement that these were only rumours.

"Alex loves life in London and does not want to leave. He believes he is at the best club and has the best coach possible." He said.

In the meantime however Nico Kranjcar when told of Arsenal’s interest has not rejected the idea:

“I am very happy at Portsmouth but it’s anyone’s intention to play at a big club” he said to Croatian newspaper Sportal.com

Kranjcar is indeed the type of player that possesses the skills and technique that Wenger values. He plays in a more creative role for Portsmouth off the main strikers but often drifts in various positions to make the play, just as Hleb is known to do.

He had a very good game against England at Wembley scoring the first goal for Croatia from about 40 yards firing a speculative shot that went through Scott Carson's arms.

Kranjcar is also a very good friend of Eduardo: “I believe he is a strong enough character to come back as a better player. But I feel very sad and sorry for my team-mate – we grew up together in Zagreb”.

Wenger: "Thanks Nastya for Hleb's resurgence"

Technically, Niko is a wonderful talent...Im not sure if he has the requiste pace to play for us. Conceivably, he could replace Rosicky who is becoming more unreliable as the days pass. One to watch, but Wenger never signs foreign players from the Prem, only Gallas.

what, exactly, is the story here?

Adding Krancjar to the squad would definitely improve it. He plays on the wings and we need a Premiership class winger which he is. Arsene might get to do a part exchange with Harry Redknapp. Maybe Justin Hoyte or Gilberto.
