Arsenal contact IK Start for Anthony Annan “the new Essien” (plus video)

By 1970’s Gooner

Anthony Annan seems to possess all those characteristics that may make him a typical Arsene Wenger signing.

He is at the not so ripe age of 22, no one has really heard of him but he is already a Ghanian international playing along side Michael Essien in the centre of Ghana’s midfield and plays in that midfield position that Asrene has said he is looking to strengthen.

His low centre of gravity at 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in), big heart and all action box to box play that has earned him the nickname “the new Michael Essien”.

He is a defensive midfielder who as you will see from the video on the right hand side of this page is happy to tenaciously compete for the ball and lay it off to a team mate without much fuss.

Wenger’s interest has been confirmed by IK Start’s Director Svein Mathisen.

“We were informed about it through an agent.

We have not yet received any concrete bid, but consider it certain that he (Annan) will be sold before the transfer window closes on 31st August” he said to the Norwegian press.

IK Start have been relegated to the second division last season and are looking to make as many economies as possible.

“The financial situation indicates that we are not able to keep him in the club. He will go at the highest price we can get for Annan" Mathisen continued.

Annan joined IK Start in January 2007 , after a very promising career in Ghana with local club Accra Hearts of Oak the club that holds the registration of another player Wenger is interested in Tawrik Jebril.

He quickly established himself as a first team regular during I.K. Start's pre season games. Unfortunately he was plagued by injury and illness during the first part of the 2007 season, and did not participate in the final games of the relegation season.

After Start got relegated during the 2007 season, he joined Stabæk on loan until August 2008.

He has already had a week’s trial at Blackburn but if Arsenal comes calling he is unlikely to reject the lure of such a big club and the chance to be tutored by Arsene Wenger.

Annan himself does not lack confidence.

“I have experience in European football and have played in the tough and physical Norwegian League. I've played in Africa and in the World Cup qualifiers with Ghana. I'm mature and ready for the Premier League”.

Arsenal 1 - 1 Sevilla

I've come to a conclusion on why Wenger hasn't bought enough quality experienced players for a few seasons now. The funds are not available!!! I don't care if he says money is not the problem. It is!!! Why are we selling our experienced players and replacing them with youngsters?

All he's doing is hoping that the players, especially our second string, improve a lot each season and that we get lucky with injuries. That's it. Even if we buy a quality CB and DM we will struggle if we get injuries like last year.

I'm happy he played our second string against Sevilla. Hopefully the lads can improve over the season. Hopefully, some of them can step in for a couple of games when we need to rest players or when we have injury problems.

Can you imagine if this was the Carling Cup? Is this our CC team? Now can you imagine if Sevilla were Spurs? Oh dear.

But, seriously, these lads aren't good enough to trouble the boys in the 1st 11. So here's hoping that Cesc & co stay injury free. Otherwise, We've just won our last trophy this season.

according to

Wenger says he won't complete any signings until maybe next week after the Twente match b/c he's focussing on the match. My money is on Wenger making a signing after the W.B.A match and before the Fulham match (August 16 to 23), but definitely before the close of the window.

And I think Justin Hoyte is on his way out. Read it for yourself.

Have a good one gunners!

true, it appears we have no money. a bigger stadium, if managed, throws off bigger cash flows and should service the debt without impinging our transfer activity to this extent(all those new luxury boxes and our ticket prices the highest in the league). that and more money from tv deals and we still can't buy. it appears wenger is operating under incredible financial constraints. afc finances are likely a shambles.

Anonymous said...

no doubt mate, we can't buy so let's just stop dreaming. anyway, when the window closes we'll all be behind the team.

Anonymous said...

true, we'll let wenger do his job and we'll do ours, but shyte we look weaker than ever, the teams really gonna need us this campaign.

Anonymous said...

i'll take this kid, looks like it's all we can afford.

Anonymous said...

shyte, half of wengers salary could pay for this kid, c'mon wenger.

Im, an norwegian football fan, Annan seems great, IK Start bought another great brazilian last year, Ygor, and i have heard he has impressed in Brazil to, but to comment this, i would like to say that he is an ugly player sometimes, but a very good one, if he got some weeks under Wenger we don't have to say he is similiar to Essien, he will be better than Essien

Im a Stabaek fan, and have enjoyed Annan this season. He is one of the norwegian leagues hardest workers. Wonderfull defence qualities, and plays with international confidence, looks more pro than the rest of the norwegian league. 100% effort the whole match trough. But as commented before; he kan be ugly in tackles, fakes, makes a scene, gets unnessecery red card etc. I dont like his attidute when it comes to fair play, but his working morale is outstanding. More accurate than essien in passing... not very keen on attacking, but more the "calm things down" sort of guy. Hope he stays... even though stabaek has allready bought two midfield players to compensate for annans suretocome transfer this month...

I think Arsenal's football has set all of us in a great position.

That just about wraps it up. My collection of the very best centre forwards to kick a ball for Manchester Utd before Ferguson's days. Are you wondering why I decided to only include pre-Ferguson players in this list? Actually it's simply because I feel the forwards that have been at Utd during Alex Ferguson's lengthy leadership in charge of United require a write up all to themselves. Sir Alex Ferguson hasn't been short of forwards to chose from. There is a good chance this wont be my last word on the issue. A piece on the strikers who played for Alex may be on the cards. arsenal football It took a while before United would again savour the sweet taste of victory, but in the nineties and early noughties, Sir Alex Ferguson led the club to eight league championships in 11 years, the last one during the 2002-03 season. The team also made history in 1999 as the first team to win the elusive treble, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season. carrick Manchester United Football Club is an English football club that plays in the Premier League. The Red Devils as they are commonly known have more than 300 million world-wide supporters. Meaning that out of every 20 people on earth, one of them will be a Manchester United Fan! Currently managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United are one of the most successful teams in the history of English football having won 21 major titles since he became manager in 1986. During its remarkable history, many distinguished players have run out in the famous Manchester United shirt which can trace its origins back when Manchester United were known as Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club.
