There are three ways Arsenal can play without replacing Adebayor

By 1970’s Gooner

One aspect that Adebayor was able to bring to Arsene’s tactical options plate was variation. Variation in the way that Arsenal was able to switch from the pass and move game that characterises all of Wenger’s teams to the long high ball for the tall and powerful front man.

This is particularly useful as most teams in the Premiership have learnt how to combat the passing game that Arsenal usually play. They put a lot of men behind the ball, pressured tightly, especially in the middle of the pitch and tried to counter attack.

Add to this the fact that as Arsenal’s teams usually contain a lot of relatively inexperienced youngsters then a mistake in defence, eventually and almost inevitably, led to a goal (unless Arsenal scored first upon which the other team usually let in more goals).

So if Arsenal does not buy a similar type player then what are we left with?

Option 1: Nicklas Bendtner gets promoted

This is the carry on as usual option. Bendtner will replace Adebayor as a regular in the Arsenal line up and Arsene will play either 4 4 1 1 with van Persie just behind the young Dane or 4 4 2 with the two players playing nearer each other.

For those who are fans of the young man this option sounds attractive and I think Nicklas will be able to step up the plate and take responsibility.

However I don’t think he will be consistent enough in his performances. And you have to take into account that injuries are part of football.

Option 2: Van’s the man

Robin van Persie can move forward and play the front man role. He has done it often enough this past season when Adebayor was injured but above all he is now an experienced forward who can take on the Premiership defenders and win.

He would however be more effective in a 4 4 2 formation as he is the type of player who needs others around him to connect with. His passing ability allows him to do that.

And there are now enough forward players in the squad that can play with him up front. Eduardo is the most likely candidate but there is of course Arshavin, Nasri, Vela and even Rosicky.

Fabregas was tried in that role last season but in my opinion he is not as effective there as in his central midfield position.

Option 3: Walcott gets what he wants

Theo has always maintained that his best and natural position is through the middle and Arsene Wenger also believes that this is where he will eventually end up.

He may well be right as Theo has the pace and goal scoring ability to eventually succeed there.

But not now. He is not strong enough yet to hold defenders off, his height does not help his heading ability which needs to be developed and he is still just a kid.

If Arsene does not buy another forward then it is obvious that Nicklas Bendtner and Robin Van Persie will play a major role in deciding whether Arsenal succeed in winning a major trophy this coming season.

I think that the three options that you have are good but also i could have one more 4-5-1 with this lineup almunia-sagna-toure-gallas-clichy-walcott-nasri-fabregas-rosicky-arshavin-van persie

I would love to see this line-up

which team needs a coconut tree upfront anyway?

I think that Eduardo (injury free) is the most prolific goalscorer we have got, imagine the impact he could have with a prolonged spell in the team.

Option 4, Arsenal fast forward 5 years and buy Peter Crouch now....Nick Bendtner at maturity. Nothing more, but probably nothing less.

I'm already missing Ade. Anyone know the Joni Mitchell song Big Yellow Taxi? Sing along......"You don't know what you've got till it's gone...."

Give us this day the POWER and the GLORY that is Adebayor.

Keef,

Imagine Eduardo AND Adebayor right alongside him opening up the defence. Never got to see that because of the leg break. Stuff that wet dreams are made of though. Now it's Ade and Rubinho at Citeh.

Ogbafemi Martins and Dudu anyone? Hold on while I slit my wrists.

4-5-1 will not work in modern game, unless it's second half you protect a 3+ goal lead.
Eduardo and RVP are the two obvious choices in a 4-4-2 with Rosicky and Arshavin on the wings with Cesk and Denilson in the middle.
I personally prefer 4-3-3 with Edu, AA23 and RVP up-front and Cesk, Rosicky (Nasri) and Denilson (Song) behind. Bendtner still needs couple more years, but in the meantime can replace RVP or Edu in more physical games, suspensions or injuries. Walcatt's perfect as a sub when games open up and there's space to run into.
I voted "yes" to replace Aid, but I change my mind, we have strong enough squad. I case AW does go for a replacement, Pogrebnyak has my vote. He's stronger and bigger than Huntelaar, links-up well with Arshavin, doesn't need five chances to score a goal, and will be relatively cheap because his contract runs out soon.

Keef is spot on, he is truelly worldclass in my eyes i just pray he has a injury free campaign i can honestly see him scoring 30+ goals.

Eduardo 33/1 prem top scorer.

Its basically free money.

We need another striker to replace Adebayor.

RvP was barely able to stay fit last season and the two previous seasons he missed roughly 45-50% of the season with injury. In fact, last season Wenger usually wouldn't risk playing him two matches within the same week. In the spring he was hobbled a bit by groin/thigh injury.

Also, he is a phenomenal talent, but an inefficient striker. His conversion rate has consistently been lower than Adebayor and is amongst the lowest out of top forwards. RvP's instinct is drop deep to try to link play and doesn't seem to have the fitness, lungs and closing ability needed to play upfront on his own. He also slows down the play too often instead of accelerating it.

As for Eduardo, no player has ever returned to full fitness from the sort of horrific assault he suffered. Hopefully, he can do it, but it would be foolish to count on his fitness.

Bendtner seems capable, but again his instinct is to drop deep and link the play - also he isn't exactly energetic when upfront on his own.

Wenger doesn't seem to trust Vela, who needs a run of games. Walcott should be used primarily as an impact substitute on the right.

When you look at our options and assume that both RvP and Eduardo could likely be hampered by injury, we would seem to have a couple of options.

One option would be to use the genius Arshavin in his best position off a striker. Would need RvP to push closer to goal and to the right, but this could work well. However, shifting Arshavin would mean we need another wide midfielder (Juan Mata, Mesut Ozil, Eden Hazard) as we can't rely on Rosicky's fitness.

The other option would be to bring in a for-like replacement for Adebayor. Chamakh has outstanding technical ability, but he isn't an accomplished finisher. Demba Ba could provide power, but his game is very rough and his conversion rate isn't great either.

Chamakh would seem to appeal the most in the sense that he is very versatile and quick. Although he isn't by any stretch the finished article, he has all the ingredients save finishing.

However, his movement is great as is his hold up play. Importantly, he can play as a link-man or as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 where he operated for Bordeaux with Gourcuff as the supporting playmaker. He can also play as a wide forward in a 4-3-3.

davi said...

change of formation to 4-3-3, but otherwise surely vela has done more than walcott to be given a chance up front. He finishes his chances more consistently (from what we've seen at least), is more skillful, much stronger and almost as fast. Probably just as fast when he gets going but walcott accelerates extremely quickly.
But it looks like bendtner will get the chance early on unless someone is signed. Nicklas tended to be in the side when ade was out last year and did pretty well overall.
Eduardo will probably work his way into the starting line-up as the season progresses. Hope so anyway

Anonymous said...

LOL. You talk about Bendtner and Van Persie being the definate pairing in the absense of Adebayor because, as you say, Walcott is just a kid.

Well, before his injury Eduardo was the first choice striker. He's now back from injury and you'll find he'll soon be the first choice striker again.

LMFAO with you not mentioning Eduardo upfront, or Arshavin.

Anonymous said...

Walcotts only a year younger than Bendtner and has played more games than him for Arsenal though Bendtner's played more international games but that probably says more about Denmark than anything, (probably wouldn't have if he was English). The only a kid line doesn't work anymore. Its step up time for Theo.

Anonymous said...

4-1-5 yes we don't play with a forward just 5 midfields who go for goal and get back when need, sounds mad but that would be total football

Anonymous said...

All i will say is that what Adebayor gave us was variation. Variation in terms of being a targetman when we mix things up and use long balls into the box.
It worked at times and got us out of jail.

I think we easily forget that PL teams find it easy to defend against us when it is just our normal floor-play pass and move football. Now that Adebayor is gone, who is the big guy who we can aim at?

Did I hear you say Bendtner?
Bendtner was tried in that role last season and it was very obvious he was not ready to play upfront on his own. RVP is not an option as he does not have the upper body strength and whilst Eduardo and Rosicky have to be allowed to rehabilitate properly into the team, I believe our solutions are not internal. They are definately external.

I want to believe Arsene is saying we don't need to buy anyone because he doesn't want to put himself at the mercy of clubs who will want all his £25m in one go if possible. I'm sure Arsenal are looking at some players both in attack, midfield and defence. I believe we aren't done yet.

Look at all our strikers? Who can stand tall as a lineleader and withstand the pressures of playing alone in the PL. I'm certain that we currently have no one in that category and that makes me understand the thinking behind Chamakh. Ideally, I would want KJHuntelaar but we still need that quality that Adebayor gave us.

Anonymous said...

The latest is martins has been linked with the gunners again. I hope Arsenal don't go for the lower priced players. As we all know cheap things aint good.
Of course there are two sides to the argument. For every Berbatov there will be a torres.
The point is if a lower end of a player is purchased and doesn't deliver the goods, it will be time wasted. In such a case Arsenal will be better off by blooding the carling cup youngsters.

RayParlourJr said...

I don't think it's as cut and dry as 3/4 options, it all seems a little silly and while all those things are possible and valid options it would seem to me that you've made this all overly clinical. We have lots of options and can play any formation we like, including Wenger's classic 3 3 4 in the last ten minutes when we're down, the way we used to when we had Bergkamp and Kanu.

Anonymous said...

Selling Ade was a huge mistake and we will regret it a lot. However, not replacing him with a similar physical target man that could bring down and hold the ball when the legs are tired and we go to the long ball way will be even bigger mistake. Look at all the goals that we scored from long balls and you will see that 80% are scored by Ade. In the current squad there is no one that could do that job. Edu, RVP, Bendtner, Arsh, Vela are all second striker type of players. Walcott could be but only for his speed. When we play against 10 people in the penalty box he is useless. Despite all the bad things about Ade we should have kept hold of him at least for another season.

Anonymous said...

how about shevchenko

Anonymous said...

It would be a mistake to think adebayor was worth nothing...he is definitely going to hurt us man city giving the same money for adebayor equivalent to Tevez, chelsea ,milan and braca last season wanted him do u meant to say they are all stupid...
Chamakh doesnt finish well the same as adebayor and we will start moaning about his finishing in few months he signs for arsenal(see the number if one on ones he has missed in youtube videos).......huntelaar for 18 million or goran pandev can only take arsenal out of jail...huntelaar finishing is what we need now...or else if the 25 million is going to be used for balancing the books for the club then it will definitely end up in humiliation.......fabregas , vanpersie will leave by the end of the season and arsenal will no more be a big four club........

Anonymous said...

Playing with a big centre forward has never been Arsene's style. His previous experience with Monaco and then now with Ade, has proved to be a failure. He will revert to his more natural game plan; intechangeable and fast moving forwards. i think it will be either Van or Walcott who will step up. Aided by Fab, Nasri, Rosicly and Arshavin. Bendtner and Eduardo will be used as an option, ie, when we need a result, the big man will become a sub to try andchnage the game.

Anonymous said...

i really dont understand why people dont think bendtner can succeed adebayor. Sure, his finishing wasnt the best midway through the season, but the development he made at the end of terrific. And to be honest, i dont think adebayor can match bendtners aerial prowess. The kind of effort bendtner puts in, the desire to succeed, the creative passing, the HUGE jumps he does (seriously, i dont think many people realise just how high he can jump, even with him being tall). Even his finishing was getting better towards the end. Adebayor was given the chance to fill henrys shoes, bendtner should be given the same, only bendtner doesnt slow down play as much as ade, is a far better dribbler and is alot more creative. atleast than the current state adebayor is in

King_Kolo said...

I think Nikki is more then capable of stepping it up and taking over where Ade left. Yes he had some bad games and he said that himself but after his spell and he wasn't the only one having a run of bad game. Clichy was slippin' this season and he's one of my favorite players. At the end of the season Nikki brought it big time and did really well. If he start where he left off then he should be fine.

At this squad ,Le boss have some answers but may be not the right answer for the fans. I think sometime we should win in the ugly style ( we say the strong tackle ,powerful fighting and a little bit passing but effective may be the beautiful.)

Unknown said...

If we dont sign Huntelar we will have another season without a trophy he is world class please boss get this player we will win everything with him he is truly the best center forward out there that can be bought Failing that we are screwed to being 2nd 3rd or 4th again. Ade was a big loss with him i feel we could have won it all this year it sucks i hope he has a shity season

i think wenger would use 4-4-2 when play home matches then convert to 4-5-1 with a lone stiker supported by an attacking midfielder, probably arshavin or nasri or rosicky when play away matches. but with adebayor gone, bendtner and vela would get more playing time while eduardo probably promoted to partner van persie on regular basis.

Anonymous said...

if wenger wants to replace adebayor, chamakh is the obvious option because he is similar with adebayor. some said huntelear would be a better option but i beg to differ. huntelear don't have good pace, nor he strong like adebayor. he just a good finisher and we already have strikers like that in vela and eduardo. if chamakh don't come, then wenger unlikely to buy anyone. although i will not be surprise if wenger goes for gignac. i personally like that guy. he 187cm, good pace, strong body and good finisher.

Anonymous said...

personally i very much believe we should play a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 formation with sagna-toure-gallas-clichy-nasri-fabregas-rosicky-ashavin and then in a support striker role bendnter i seriously believe bendter can easierly pull off being a arsenal starting player if u look last season for the amount of goals he got in the amount of time he played it was higher then RVP or adabayor he is a AMAZING striker no douts and he's strong still learning ya but betr then ada in my view

Anonymous said...

I think if fit, Eduardo, RVP, Arshavin and Cesc must start.
This rules out 4-5-1.
4-4-2 could work, but then only 2 of Rosicky, Nasri, Song and Walcott can play.

How bout we just leave out our defence, it won't make a difference!

Anonymous said...

I think wenger should use the money to beef up our defence by buying hangeland for 10mil with senderos going in the other way. We should also get huntelaar for 17 mil and hijack stuttgarts deal

starting line next season:
almunia, sagna, vermaelan, hangeland, clichy,
rosicky, fabregas, Walcott
huntelaar, arshavin, van persie

we should play a 4-1-2-1-2 with arshavin playing off the front two and cesc as our DM kind of like what liverpool do with alonso rosicky and walcott on the wings

IN WENGER WE TRUST

Anonymous said...

I DONT ACTUALLY THINK WE NEED A REPLACEMENT FOR ADE, WHAT IS NEEDED MORE IS A DM.

IF WE CAN GET OUT BACK TIGHT THIS SEASON WILL BE GREAT BECAUSE OUR MIDFIELD AND ATTACK IS QUICK.

Anonymous said...

Why do people go on about Huntelaar? Most of us are neither managers nor scouts. Why is it that the top clubs have always been reluctant to buy him? Even Real Madrid was reluctant and now they are selling him after only half a season! Why didn't Sir Alex go for him after losing Tevez and missing out on Benzema? How come Milan is not after him? Lyon too? How come Kuyt and van Persie both got into the Dutch national team before him? They must all have their reasons. Enough of it! Then the issue of the DM. The DM is not about leg breaking. It is about stemming a growing tide and distributing effectively. When it comes to that, Denilson posts better stats than most of the names being bandied around. Wenger is a stats man. He will only get someone just to provide competition. That is why Veloso is out because he will never buy someone whose age is close to Denilson's.

Anonymous said...

We simply do not need anymore strikers so what if we dont have tall guys. We still can score from set pieces, short plays..
And dont forget about eduardo, rosicky, vela, They are the ones that can change the outcome of the game.
We simply need a new goalkeeper(bloody almunia) and a big and strong yet quick defender.

Anonymous said...

Vela can play up front. if i remember right Diaby played in a more attacking role in some matches last season. Barazite can play up front as well. We have enough option we only need a reliable combo that will work all season. Then we Arsenal fans can say we are watching true chmpions

Anonymous said...

wenger out out out in wenger we trust hasnt won anything for 4 years forget final and semifinal all you get from that is heart ache he says im building a team ye right our stadium was built quicker.all hes doing is finding talent for the rest of the world to buy.

Anonymous said...

Almooonia, sagna, vermaelen, gallas, clichy, song, fabregas, rosicky, walcott, van persie, eduardo.

4-4-2.

Trust me this will win the league. If we get a better defensive MF then it's 100% in the bag.

Anonymous said...

garyrifat1 says "f we dont sign Huntelar we will have another season without a trophy" and I can't agree more with him, even if we sign Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Terry, Vidic, Ferdinand, Lass Diarra, Eto'o and Ibrahimovic, it'll all be for nought if we don't sign Huntelaar.

Anyway, I'd say Bendtner-Eduardo would be the best partnership, RVP's probably a better player than both of them but I think those two would work better as a partnership. Arshavin as a second striker would be an option but then we may need another winger and I think Bendtner's ready to step up based on his performances towards the tail end of last season. He needs to be playing more regularly now and I think he deserves the chance to do so.

Also, I think we'll go with the traditional 4-4-2 for most games.

I think we need whole sale changes in defence firstly, a dm a striker to replace ade and a good keeper, so with that in mind heres the squad i think we need.

Frey(8m).Almunia.Fabianski.
Senderos.Djourou. Both out ,Sagna.Hangeland(10m).Richards(6m).Clichy Vermaelen.Gallas.Toure.Traore Gibbs.Rosicky.Walcott. Denilson.Diaby.Song.Inler(12m).Arshavin.Hazard(5m).Fabregas.Nasri.Ramsey.Wilshire.Barazite.Bentdner.Eduardo.Van Persie.Vela. Simpson.Gignac(18m).

Anonymous said...

4-4-1-1, almunia-sagna-gallas-vermaelen-clichy-nasri(walcott)-denilson(song)-fabregas-rosicky-arshavin(bendtner)-RVP(eduardo)
That would no doubt be the strongest offence in the league.I dont think theres any need to replace adebayor, but i think a tall CB and an experienced DM wouldnt hurt.Id like to see flamini back here but I doubt AW buys back players hes sold.

I used to think that Walcott would be a great striker, given his speed, sharpness, ball control etc. However there was one game late last season (forget which one) where he had 4 or 5 chances to shoot from well inside the 18yd box and he fluffed every one. He had no composure at all when crowded and under pressure (contrast with Nasri, for example, who is hugely composed when crowded)and missed the target with virtually every shot. I know that is only one day's evidence, but is was enough for me to revise my view. I worry that the lad is just a runner, rather than a footballer.

Biscuit said...

The squad is over-exposed to tricky little attacking midfielders. They are mostly very good players, but we have too many of these and are massively lacking in other areas (solid defensive midfielders, CB, big stiker, goalie). We need to sell some of the little guys:
5'8": Vela
5'9": Eduardo, Fabregas, Ramsey, Rosicky, Walcott
5'10": Nasri.

I would be prepared to sell Walcott, before he is found out as a scared little runner boy with no end-produce, Eduardo, who has never really done anything.

Biscuit said...

I rest my case:

French publications L'Equipe and France Football are reporting that Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri has been taken to hospital in Austria following an injury sustained while training on the Gunners' pre-season tour of the country.

The 22-year-old was transported by two members of staff, reportedly crying in pain, to the regional hospital in Hartberg. The nature of his injury is yet to be determined.

I agree with you. The past day ,I think Theo may be the great player, but today I hope so . Today Theo ' problem in the game is the egg that he has a little bit when he found the forceful tackle by the old english-style player and lack of cool in the box . But both problem can solved easily by himself and study hard how 's so cool in the box in the way like Michael Owen finished in the box. I'm not the daydreamer about Theo because he looked to have a good vision and attitude to be the professional football that Bentley ,Pennent and some who 're departed the club . Like this I keep and cheer him to be the great man

Fans can be really two faced, some people last week were posting on blogs that they were going to give adebayor a lift to the airport and saying how this is a good deal.Well let me tell you something Adebayor gave us somrthing that no other striker in the squad can give us etc staying fit, aerial.physical presence without that were nothing look at chelsea when they did not have drogba at the start of the season. One thing is for sure the strikers we got now would not hurt any top 4 club and certainly will not stay fit.GUNNER1995

It's best to try out a game alone first. There is no point playing a game online if you are having trouble playing the traditional version! If the game is too hard, trade it and get something you prefer. It is time to find a new game if you are getting frustrated and do not have fun anymore.

Some of the most reveled games ever made are classics. Play them! You will also save tons of money this way. Some are available online for quite a deal.
