One of Wenger’s substitutions made the difference against Everton

By 1970’s Gooner

I can’t understand why Arsene Wenger insists on starting with Wilshere in the middle of the midfield for Arsenal.

Sure the kid is playing beyond his years and will surely, if his head is not turned by all this media attention, become another Arsenal legend. But he is not yet that physically strong or wily enough to contribute effectively in this very significant area of the pitch.

Even when Fabregas was at the same stage of development as Wilshere is now he didn’t get to play in the middle. Wenger used to deploy him on the right wing, if you remember. He did the same with Diaby for a few seasons before he could trust him in the middle.

It also seems to me that Wilshere tries to be a play maker as well as attending to his defensive duties which somehow tends to crowd Fabregas out when he drops a little bit back to receive the ball.

When Wenger made the substitution at half time with Denilson coming on I felt a lot more confident that we will come away with the win. Denilson is now very fit and on form. He showed today and whenever he came on in recent games that he is maturing into an effective midfield defensive player.

He is very energetic, positions himself at the right places, wins the ball and lays off the simple pass to a free player. This is how we scored the second and decisive goal, when he passed the ball to Fabregas on the edge of the area who guided it to Chamack who then returned it for Fabregas to strike it in.

A great performance by Arsenal winning two consecutive games on the road and coupled by a very satisfying home defeat by Chelsea means we are only two points off the top.

Let’s beat the hell out of the spuds next week….

Wilshire in the middle is fine at home, but away from home he gets bullied. Denilson is a better bet for away games, he is showing his experience now.

Very true. Im a big Denilson fan myself, you have him anchoring the midfield every week with Song and Cesc roaming.

Denilson would have been even better if he'd been wearing the right studs, he kept slipping over! He's very underrated I think, like you say he keeps it simple and tidy. Wilshere's a great little player though and he does read the game really well, he just needs to fill out a bit.

Denilson is shit, he's just having a decent spell, still don't think he's good enough to play for Arsenal. I much prefer Jack in the middle & when Ramsey finally comes back, Denilson will have even less playing time(hopefully)

As much as I have slagged off denilson in the past, he had an excellent second half. Was surprised we started with wilsh as he struggled against wolves, so I assumed he would have been rested.

Denilson was just rubbish. Did you silly bloggers even see the game?

We were lucky. Everton hammered us and Denilson was garbage.

Did you even see how denilson and clichy jumped out the way for a Pienaar shot? Absolute disgrace. If it wasn't for Fabainski we would have lost!

Completly agree,We looked more balanced when denny came on today,Cesc looked better in the second half because he had more freedom knowing that denilson was behind and would stay there unlike song and jack who love going forward which means Cesc has to cover for them.

Denilson. A good sub. Let's keep him.

That is all.

wilshire is being played in the middle because hes being fasttracked by wenger in case cesc leaves

Wiltshere has to play to get the experience against tough strong opposition. We tired at the end after 2 tough games on the road in just a few days. Denilson was quite good- without being really outstanding. Main thing is we won against a good team- without being able to field our strongest team.

He plays in the middle because he will be cesc replacement and its innevitable that cesc will leave next year so we have no time but to adapt him into the middle asap. Denilson does not offer enough creativity or attacking qualities to partner cesc. Denilson is a similar type of play to song .

denilson is a very good player indeed. though not yet the finished article by any means. he has captained brazil at every level except for the seniors. he is tidy and tactically sound and soon will be one of the best holding midfielders in the world. he came from a truly tough background on the mean streets of sao paulo. he has real strenth of character. i don't understand why some fans are so negative about our players. the lust for expensive signings and their frustration at not getting them is making fans (some fans) bitter. get behind the team for heavens sake. we are in the title race. and any way you look at it, denilson is not s**t.

Honestly, there are people who come around the blog tyry to spill our players' names,it only takes ignorance and lack of sports knowledge to call a player like denilison sh**t,denilison to me is no doubt going to be one of the greatest holding midfielders arsenal has ever had,he just needs more playing time.

Wilshere didn't have the best of games yesterday but he is definitely better than Denilson

You couldn't be more wrong!!! When Denilson came one we were useless in midfield. He gives the ball away, passes sideways and can't tackle without committing fouls. We were 1 up at half time and whilst I would credit Denilson for his part in the second goal, I also feel him being in the middle is what allowed Everton to come at us so strongly at the end.

Come on people wake up!! I won't bad mouth him to the extent of using offensive language and will always cheer the team on regardless of who is playing as I love the club but come on!!
Denilson loses the ball far too much, his passing is nowhere near what it should be. His tackling is too poor to be a holding midfielder AND when have you EVER seen Denilson really bust a gut and sprint to catch someone that goes past him, it doesnt happen, he just jogs!!
Yes I agree Wilshere didnt have his best of games but at least he gets stuck in and makes things happen.
In comparison Wilshere is better than Denilson now and when he gets to Denilsons age he will be in a different class!
On the comment of crowding Cesc out - what is that all about? Cesc has been injured and is just coming back to fitness, thats the reaosn he has been quieter than usual.

absolute rubbish. fabregas played in the middle with Patrick viera when he was first playing for arsenal. i agree that wilshere is not strong enough for central mid in some games as the arsenal team as a whole is not as physical as it used to be. if Viera was playing alongside wilshere he would playa lot better..

Well done Fabianski - again. Yet another Arsenal "Sh.TE" player that is coming good - repaying the managers faith. Guaranteed there will be another blunder that will get the mob roaring for blood but heck that goes with the territory for a keeper. In the meantime well done lad. Team are 2 pts from the summit of the PL despite being beaten 3 times - strange sort of year!!!

I have been a big Denilson critic in the past but yesterday showed why we are all armchair managers.
Denilon had an instant impact and quite clearly changed the game.
He is inconsistent but credit to Arsene great call!

I don't think it's a question of one player being better than another. We play a team game using a squad of players each with their own talents. I think that for once we should congratulate Wenger for making the right substitution at the right time.

Fabregas has always played in the middle, it's just he was a superior player at the same age as Wilshere.

The point is here it was Moyes substitution of Rodwell (More attacking than bulling). Wilshere took one hell of a hammering from him Cant think of his name "Hillbosher" or something. If Denislson was on in the First half, and Wilshere the second, we would have be even more potent. At least he can pass a ball to Ashavin. Or switch play. All for Denilson and recyling the ball etc.
