Wenger’s “top class” Vela makes everyone sit up and notice against Real (plus Video)
By 1970’s Gooner
I made a point of watching Carlos Vela during the summer in the FIFA Under 20’s World Cup which took place in Canada.
He was after all a relatively recent Arsenal signing and obviously any youngster who is spotted and signed by Wenger must have the special qualities of exceptional technique and skills (coupled with a good character).
I was not that impressed. He was not involved much during the games and stayed peripheral to the action. He was however deployed more in the centre forward areas of the pitch or just behind the forward rather than the wings.
He played in all five matches but Mexico were knocked out at the Quarter-Final stage by eventual winners Argentina.
He has since been loaned out to Osasuna in Spain (he was on loan previously to second Division outfit Salamanca)and has been almost a regular for Osasuna in recent games.
You may remember him scoring a wonderful goal against Real Betis which caught everyone’s attention.
So I made a point of watching him in action again last Saturday in the match against Real Madrid which Osasuna lost 3-0.
I was hugely impressed with his performance as he was a constant thorn on Real Madrid’s defense who had their hands full to contain him. They more often than not reverted to fouling him. He was that quick.
He reminded me of a committed and energetic Reyes who was forever dribbling past his marker with pace and ease only to be felled to the floor unceremoniously. He looks like a carbon copy.
Let’s hope he takes to the English weather better than Reyes did.
He was playing on the left hand side of midfield, as an out and out old fashioned winger. Osasuna’s counter attacking tactics suited his style of play very well. And he certainly ran the line with exceptional technique and skill.
On one occasion he nutmegged Sergio Ramos from a very tight position on the corner line and left him wondering where the ball was. Make a point on watching this particular skill on the video screen on the right hand side of this page.
Vela feels himself richer for the experience having played at the Bernabeu against such high quality opposition:
"These matches are a source of motivation, and we were all keen to play well. We went with the intention of winning and we gave them a good match he said.
When Vela signed a permanent deal at Arsenal at the beginning of the year Wenger was 100% convinced of his ability.
"He's top class. I like his intelligence and his pace. He scores goals but he can also create them. "He's a special talent and I believe 100 per cent that he will make it at the highest level."

no doubt vela impressed.he tortured sergio ramos in the first half and that no easy feat when you consider that ramos is one of the best defender in the world.
We need a genuine left winger in the side. Bring him back from loan now I say
definatley gonna try watch ossasuna more often now...
He looks a good player and Wenger rates him highly. Perhaps he is the reason Wenger has'nt signed an attacking wide player on the left? Its clear Wenger is waiting for Vela to gain a little more experiance and then he will bring him back. You're right about him being like Reyes 1970's, and I rated Reyes. If he can handle the weather he'd be blinding!! Perhaps we should loan him to a Russian club and when he comes back to us he'll think its warm!!
maybe Wrighty7's idea about Russia can be applied to all foreign youngsters!
Wow, he looked really good. He's got some pace. I'd read about him but hadn't seen him in action recently. The kid is quick, he moves constantly without the ball. His vision looked pretty good. Most importantly he looks like he'll fit in well with the Arsenal style. I always thought of him as more of a forward but he could be our LM solution when Rosicky leaves in a year or two (or maybe three).
Carlos Vela vs Real Madrid last weekend

He looked unstoppable. his threat either on the left sometimes or up front with RvP could potentially be truly the best in a few years.
I rarely judge on such little evidence but he really does lok like alongside the Arsenal best he could become one of the world's best players....along with the rest of our squad :D
btw Flamster should have been man of the match, not the others.
I cant wait to see him in a Arsenak shirt. Its Reyes 2.0.
Flamster is crap
wow is that all in one match?! I'm impressed.
n don't worry he is going to make it. The Neville brothers don't play in the same sh!t team that is manc anymore. plus, he looks physically and mentally stronger than Reyes. In the video there's this instance when he was trip by i think sergio ramos, he got right back up and chased the ball. Reyes would have stayed on the ground 1000% sure. On a final note, Walcott's Arsenal future is looking bleaker and bleaker with Bendtner and Vela looking soooo promising
He was pushed off the ball a lot. He tried a lot of moves that didn't come off, lost the ball a lot, took the wrong option on a few occasions. He's not the finished product, and needs to spend more time in Spain. That said, he does have a lot of promise and will be a great addition to the team in a couple of yers.
That said, I liked that bit by the corner, where he shielded the ball from Ramos and then spun around him. Excellent.
Osasuna must have the shittiest defence in the world cause their offense is amazing. This was more action in one game than you usually see from any of our players. And he was on a 3-0 losing side while we win almost every game.
I think what Stone says is true. This boy is so good even in a team that is not doing that well in the Spanish league!
I saw him in action yesterday vs. Mallorca. Vela is extremely talented! They were up 2-1 and he made it 3-1 with a sweet cross few minutes before the end. He was flying down the left side, and tapped it around one of the Mallorca players,at one point they tried to trip him from behind,he only stumbled but kept going, which tells you a lot about this kids character and strength, after that he crossed the ball just outside the 6 yard box and his team mate calmly slotted it into the back of the net,he's truly amazing for being only 18,I rate him much higher than Walcott. He reminds me of Cesc, not the style but how he's so young but extremly intelligent!
