Greedy Wenger dents Arsenal’s title hopes

By 1970’s Gooner

I was very interested to see what Wenger had in mind when I saw Arsenal’s team sheet containing Rosicky and Walcott.

It was obvious that they were not going to be up to the physical approach that Birmingham have been renowned for this season.

And so it proved to be. Walcott was very quiet and Rosicky coming back form an injury lay off was pretty ineffective. He was almost at walking pace for most of the game!

The effect of this selection was that Arsenal had no width with which to stretch the game which inevitably meant that most of the play had to come through the middle.

But hell, that is where we were at our weakest. Especially against Bowyer and Ferguson who were both very combative indeed.

Song’s inevitable move to centre back (he had a fine game) meant that Denilson and Diaby had to act as the defensive shield. Neither did.

Denilson was not strong enough and Diaby was more forward minded than Fabregas even!

The lack of width and crosses also meant that Bendtner was not supplied the balls with which to do any damage.

It wasn’t until the two most obvious substitutions were made that we immediately began looking like we could score. And we did.

Arshavin and Nasri should have started the game. If they had we would have probably ran out winners from the first half.

What an earth was Arsene Wenger thinking of?

The answer is obvious. He was greedy enough to think that this Arsenal team could actually win the double! The Premiership and the Champions League.

That is why he rested these two players and Eboue as well. He intends to play them on Wednesday at the Emirates.

But surely the most important game is always the next one.

Wenger should have played his strongest team, get the win against Birmingham, keep us in the title race and then with confidence high go into the game against Barcelona.

But now it has backfired.

It seems that it is Chelsea who have benefited from getting knocked out of the Champions League.

Not us…

I am really disappointed about dropping 2 points, but could Wenger have legislated for that freak goal? (Which Manuel should have saved anyway)
The only thing I blame Wenger for this season is in the transfer market. No other team pretending to challenge for the title who had seen their best forward go down with a 5-month injury would have chosen not to buy a replacement in January. We were never going to continue banging in the goals for fun..........

Errr... Nasri and Arshavin both had knocks. That was why they were not played from the start.

i was gutted that we conceded late we need to see games out we cannot defend against long balls that spanish waiter has to gooooooooooooooooooo!

Very shit post.

The was a reason why we lost today, but the reason you're giving is very wrong.

Roiscky "was at walking pace today"?...did you watch the game or highlights of the goals?

The guy hustled and hustled and was our most potent player on the ball along with Diaby. And apart from Nasri scoring, Rosicky was the only player to test Hart (other than shooting straight at him like most did).

I personally would have preferred him staying on than Arshavin's introduction.

And for Walcott, he was actually better than he usually is in a physical away game.

He rarely looked bullied and forced a couple of half chances at the mouth of goal with his pace.

You've got to be kidding me with this post.

Find something else to blame on that would be more stupid than this. Maybe Villa and Bolton being so shit today?

Arshavin and Nasri were nursing injuries that is why they did not start. Shows why Wenger is running the team and not you.

A kneejerk reaction to a disappointing result. It is not necessary to fill the interweb with your post-match bile you know. You may feel better but it depresses the hell out of the rest of us; even the ones that agree with you. We all feel upset when we don't win but please don't take out your frustrations on our beloved manager or team individuals. The ref was at fault as much as anyone. Shit happens, get over it and stay positive. Even if we have kissed the title goodbye this season has made me very proud anyway. UP THE ARSENAL!

i think we should utilized Eboue's knack for exploiting gaps in the box ,unlike Sagna who acts likes he's scared of stepping when even Stevie Wonder could see the openings

What a shit post!
Although never hitting any type of fluency, the team never looked in any real danger.

There was nothing wrong with the selection, in fact I would of taken off Fabregas, who was clearly struggling following his injury and put Nasri in his place.

Rosicky didn't have a bad game and Walcott could have scored two.

If Arsenal had taken the chances they created, it would have been a well deserved 3 points.

Also, what's wrong in thinking that you can win both competitions?

Sharpen up blogger.

Wow... Rosicky was our best player!

Arsenal are still in the race, plain and simple. Will it be harder to win yes, but we have a chance. I would prefer focus on that.

I was begotten in a white man culture and raised accordingly, but the Great Arse is my beloved team nonetheless. It seems like too many internal and external elements working against us for five years in a row now. What I mean is that we have to fight for a title with four blacks in defense (a tricky proposition, considering statistics), incredibly horrendous and lengthy injuries, a piss-poor keeper, FA and their ferry refs with only one agenda: don't let the foreigners take the domestic glory in a World Cup year, and every single team taking pride in destroying the beautiful game. It seems like there's more than just football values we're fighting for, it's the world, the system, corruption, bias and some really nasty cunts. Still, good luck and God bless you, my beloved Gooners, on this wonderful journey.

Oh mate, it was the GK fault not Wenger's, team selection, yes he should have bought a better keeper but thats a different story.........

Disappointing analysis here I'm afraid. Misplaced criticism of the line-up - Rosicky was very good in fact. There was nothing wrong with defence generally either.

Wenger was not greedy. What do you want him to do, play players to the point of exhaustion and serious injury - or just give up in Europe instead and rest players in the biggest games.

He would be slaughtered for that.

I don't understand how you can have thought this article could be at least constructive criticism for the team in any way.

In future please try to use evidence to back up your statements, and don't make wild claims which have no basis in reality such as 'Wenger being greedy for trying to win on two fronts'.

gooner 70, I normaly respect your analysis but not this time.Rosicki played well, and gave everything for over an hour, yes there was lack of width,( Walcott does not supply that alas) but moreover lack of brawn , of Song, without him the midfield is unbalanced; ,but Wenger played his cards well, very well bringing in two aces for the last 20 minutes to high up the tempo and to finish off a tired opposition, and they did exactly that!, could have been fckng briliant!. What he was guilty of in the last 10 minutes, and he always is btw, was not to make a tactical change, slow the game down , take its sting off, instruct his team to calm the game, play triangular midfield passes and back passes, we are supposedly such great passing team, but we NEVER EVER know how to keep ball in the last 10 minutes, we go mad trying to score another one, hoofimng the ball up like some low league team, further he should have made a tactical changes, another midfielder instead of BEndtner who is useless on the counter anyway; since he did not have a midfielder on bench , Eboue sh/could have supplied both purposes, extra defender, and a ball handler and fast runner on the counter if it comes arsenal way . I agree that Arsene lack tactical nous in key moments, but not for your reasons, where danger has to be foreseen and preempted at times when he does not
Look at Barca today, they rested Xavi, MEssi, Pique, Busquet, while going to the toughest arena where Mallorca almost never loose. he got a result, one nil, bring Xavi and Messi for the finish, getting a goal and immediately changed the formation with extra midfielder. That is what what Arsene does not do. and that is why we lost.
Of Course Almunia who has the ability but not the mentality will cost even genius tactician , needless to say

Sick to death of all the Wenger bashing by idiots who haven't got a clue. So you'd have played a semi-fit Arshavin and Nasri from the start and written off the Barcelona home tie? Wenger is "greedy" for believing he can challenge for two trophies? The fact that they're still in contention for those titles come April, no matter how slim the perception of their chances, suggests some justification for that belief.
Too many of these blogs are written by so called supporters who really should go and get some anti-depressants or shut up.
Wenger has transformed Arsenal into a working model of how to run a club in the 21st Century, with a great new (full) stadium, state of the art training ground, a youth system that is the envy of everybody this side of Barcelona, topped off with a first team that plays the most entertaining football of any Arsenal side in most peoples living memory. And the result? Snide sniping from people writing articles like this. I shudder to imagine what bile you'd come out with if there were real problems, like the financial situations at Portsmouth or even Liverpool. Might I suggest those who are going to whinge about the lack of silverware, etc, bugger off and follow Mourinho and let the rest of us enjoy "the beautiful game?"

They wasnt really much wrong with the team selection. but maybe not starting arshavin was the only mistake. because nasri , in my opinion, haven't played well at all in any away games in the epl. he's always better at home. the next mistake is not bringing on the subs earlier.
And it was stupid of the team to not try to waste time in the corner flag with seconds to go. bendtner even had the cheek to control the ball at one point in a show boating way but ended up passing the ball to the opposition and they scoring from the resulting free kick!

the most obvious mistake is to not buy a goal keeper.

anon 8:51, how ignorant and arrogant are you? your club? well it's OUR club!

just because some are akbs, doesnt mean they will fuck off once arsene goes. for all you know they have supported arsenal longer than you have, attended more games than you and so on, you get the picture. And I think some of the akbs are basically supporting arsene because he is managing arsenal fc. I'm not an akb, i think arsene has fucked up for 3 transfer windows now and have made alot of mistakes tactically.
i dislike the akbs too but please dont be rude and trying to act being the superior fan . this akbs will still support arsenal even when arsene leaves.

And why must you include the word 'french' in there, racist much? arsene may annoy us fans sometimes but why must you get all abusive towards him. Pricks are words use to describe Fergie, arry rednapp and spurs in general, not the most successful manager of your club, you self-proclaimed superior arsenal fan!

When it comes to the replicas, maybe Louis Vuitton replicas are the designer handbag replicas that are commonly seen in the market.

The vitton purse that I am going to discuss in the following is the work of the artist, Takashi Murakami. And it has a wide zippered closure.
