Gilberto agrees personal terms for imminent transfer

By 1970’s Gooner

The news coming out of Athens sounds very decisive.

Gilberto’s representatives, The Base Soccer Agency, who traveled yesterday to the Greek Capital, have agreed personal terms with Panathinaikos after negotiations which lasted several hours.

And after communicating with Gilberto himself they declared that he was in agreement too.

“It is true that we have come to an agreement with Panathinaikos and Gilberto is very happy” Leon Angel, the Agency’s Chairman, said to the waiting reporters whom he described as worse than The Sun’s reporters in England!

Gilberto also spoke to the Panathinaikos President and is reported to have said:

“I am very happy to come to Greece…Panathinaikos is a big club and if an agreement is reached with Arsenal I will be very happy to join you”

This sentiment was reiterated by Leon Angel:

“We have finished our business here and we are on our way now. It is now a matter between the two teams to agree so that the transfer can go through” he continued.

It seems therefore that all that remains now is for Arsenal to agree to a fee with Panathinaikos and Gilberto will be plying his trade next season under the Greek sun.

Arsenal’s agreement looks as a given.

As we first revealed a few days ago on this site, Ken Friar has already said that if Gilberto agrees personal terms then Arsenal will not hinder the transfer process.

“If Gilberto agrees personal terms then we will not stand in his way. If this happens then it seems that we will agree a transfer fee with Panathinaikos" Friar said to Greek paper "SportDay".

Speaking to the same newspaper today, Nikos Pateras the Panathinaikos President said:

“There is an in principle agreement with the player. All that remains is for Arsenal to send the necessary legal papers confirming the oral agreement we struck with them earlier”.

Gilberto will be rewarded with a three year contract with the same wages he is currently on at Arsenal, £2m a year, plus bonuses which may add another £0.4m a year.

The third year however will come into force if Gilberto plays in 50% of the games the year before.

Arsenal will receive a fee of £1m and the player’s representatives who hold part of his registration will get another £0.8m.

Sounds pretty final to me.

But the question for us Arsenal fans is: Who will be partnering Fabregas in the central midfield area for Arsenal next season?

Is it all Wenger’s fault this transfer activity?

The woman behind Nasri!

I thought it was illegal in the UK to have players who are part owned by agents or 3rd party???

first all until this confirmed on arsenal website or on sky sports this mearly specualtion, non of this has been confirmed by arsenal or gilberto so you dont if this been made up,i hope stays we could do with abit of experience and with tall from we would be bale to deal with long balls and set plays something we could do with flamaini, but if he did leave partner fab that is very tough because both delinson and diabi have a huge whole to fill in flamani,in terms of a play maker i would say nasri but as holding midfielder to protect the defence i think song and dijouro will help.

Word is that Diabi will get his chance in the middle now and partner Cesc... I like this a lot I must say. With the signing of Nasri and return of Vela, we just might now have the closest to our 'invincibles' midfield since their ageing break up now looks to be completed with Gilberto leaving.
The most important aspect of this new midfield is that it has goals from the flanks in it, something that we have missed badly with Hleb, Rosicky and Eboue, which ultimately cost us the title last season.

To John: Arsenal lost last season not because of lack of goals from the flanks but because of the shaky defence and the worst goalkeeper Almunia. Arsenal wroth at least a goal against any team in any stadium and we scored enough goals last season. If our defence was better, we would have won something. Those who blame the flanks, don't see the whole picture as it is.

As to Cesc partner, it should definitely be Alex Song, who is the most capable defensive midfielder we have. He know to move forward with ball, to tackle and to pass well. With all my love to Diaby, he's too offensive in his orientation, his decision making isn't that good (prefer to dribble too much). Denilson is too soft to replace Flamini. Also, song proved he can't be a center back, his position and height are big disadvantages, so Song definitely needs to be Cesc's partner.

Good post 1970's.

I wish him good luck. He has been a superb servant for Arsenal and an excellent professional throughout his time at the club.

I won't forget Gilberto and what he has done for Arsenal. An excellent player who did a great job for us. He has a brilliant attitude and even when he was over-looked as captain last season and barely featured, you hardly heard a grumble for him.

Young players could learn bundles from Gilberto just by the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch. And Arsenal will miss him, not just his experience but his role in the squad.

I would be more than happy for him to stay, but you can't argue that at his age he needs regular football and it's likely he won't get that at Arsenal.

Regarding who will play alongside Cesc next season I've a feeling that Le Boss will promote from within. Someone like Diaby.

I'd love Yaya Toure at the club though or Barry. Can't see it though!!

Keep up the great articles mate!
